Description: The music dances off the page in this sprightly seasonal offering! A fresh theme written in a classic carol style creates instant joy with its tuneful invitation to the manger. A well-placed hide-a-hymn, the B section invokes the angelic chorus from “Angels We Have Heard on High,” completing the celestial effect. Crafted with limited vocal demands, this festive anthem is brief yet effective and a super song for a slim Sunday!

Description: Asteroids and comets have played an important role throughout the history of life on earth. It is quite probable that the dinosaurs have been exterminated by an asteroid's impact in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and fire storms wiped out all life. This is the year 2067 according to the Christian calendar. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and caused an asteroid to enter the earth's power of gravitation. It is instoppably approaching the blue planet. As its peoples have been fighting each other continuously, they missed the building of a global defence system against dangers coming from space. A scanner records the asteroid and immediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is judged 50% by the experts. Plans are made to shoot the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser guns in order to throw it off its track, but they fail. The asteroid's size seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Those in the know stare at the night sky in bewilderment. But for the time being, there is still peace on earth...

While 'Luna' described the mysterious moon with cold, thin sound colours,

Description: Commissioned by The Manchester Grammar School to celebrate its quincentenary in 2015. First performed on 16 April 2015 at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester by The Manchester Grammar School Choir, Hallé Youth Choir and Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Mark Elder.
Composer's Note:
“A Celestial Map of the Sky, commissioned by The Manchester Grammar School on the occasion of its quincentenary, takes its cue from two woodcuts engraved by the German polymath Albrecht Dürer in 1515, the same year in which school was founded. These two groundbreaking polar projections of the northern and southern celestial hemispheres are the oldest printed European star charts. Whereas prior celestial projections sometimes depicted allegorical figures looking over the skies, Dürer instead honoured four ancient astronomers by depicting them at their work, overseeing his maps. The various texts I have chosen (mostly extractions from larger works) reflect the changing worldview hinted at in Dürers charts. His inclusion of the four astronomers was a signal that the universe could be comprehended through human intervention rather than solely through spiritual or symbolic means.” - Tarik O'Regan
Spiral bound score includes Text section plus reprints of the celestial maps.

Description: Composer Robert Spittal was moved to complete this work in response to the Newtown, CT tragedy in 2012, and serves as a reflection of our complicated feelings of grief and loss. The music is simple and direct, and meant as a hopeful work for young players. Moved by a metaphor describing the victims as twenty-six new diamonds in the sky the title is a reference to the stars which we look upward to for inspiration, for hope, and to dream of better things to come. Dur: 3:10
