Description: Gershwin enthusiasts everywhere will love the Blue Monday: Vocal Score. Opened in August 1922, this one-act jazz opera is considered by some to be the first piece of symphonic jazz as well as a blueprint to many of Gershwin's later works. Also known as 135th Street, Blue Monday: Vocal Score is professionally arranged for piano/vocal/guitar.
Description: In contrast to the first cello sonata (HN 1357) composed four years earlier, this substantially more catchy and playful second sonata enjoyed great success with audiences and critics right from the start. Friend and associate Vincent d'Indy wrote to Fauré the day after the premiere in May 1922: “I would like to tell you how much I am still charmed by your so beautiful sonata. In it I found what is seemingly forgotten these days: music.” It therefore comes as no surprise that the sonata rapidly found its way into the concert repertoire, where it maintains an uncontested position to this today. The duo David Geringas and Markus Bellheim provided fingerings.
Description: This volume includes three pieces: “Quartettino” by Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), “Gavotte in Old Style” by Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) and “Elegie” by Josef Werner (1837-1922).
Vols. 1 (50510615) and 2 (50510614) also available.
Description: “Jeanine Rueff (1922-1999) was a French composer and music educator. Her Concertino for Clarinet and orchestral or Piano accompaniment was first published in 1950 and remains a popular, alternative piece in the advanced clarinetist's performance repertoire. Rueff wrote extensively for the Saxophone and Clarinet and her compositions are often used as required contest solos. Concertino is fast and contains complex rhythms. Other appealing musical features include chromaticism, triplet motifs and the exploitation of the entire range of the Clarinet. Rueff's Concertino provides a challenging yet riveting piece for advanced clarinetists.”
Description: This version of Cortege and Litanie by Marcel Dupré was written for organ. For upper intermediate players, this 8 page composition is written with 4 sharps and includes the use of the pedals. The piece, initially written for a small orchestra in 1922, was created for a play. Dupré integrated it into one of his piano recitals and was later asked to arrange it for other instruments. These scores therefore exist also arranged for piano, orchestra (in 4 and 16) and for the conductor. In terms of composition, the piece is divided into two: “Cortege,” which title describes a solemn procession, begins in E major and lasts twice as long as the introductory theme; and “Litanie,” which is describing the prayer sung during a procession and which follows the “Cortege” part to then be joined by it. Marcel Dupré is a French composer and virtuoso organist who won the Prix de Rome in 1914. He became famous when he played the work of Bach in its totality from memory in 1920. He later became the professor of many renowned students at the Paris Conservatoire such as Messiaen, Langlais and Cochereau among others.

Description: This deceptively simple choral work by African-American composer Mitchell Southall (1922-1989) is surely one of the most beautiful Christmas pieces ever composed.
Piano music occupies a small, but nevertheless musically important place in Janácek's oeuvre. Our edition of “In the Mists” by the seasoned Janácek editor Jirí Zahrádka is an impressive example of this. The small cycle was composed in 1912 and first published the following year. But as was so often the case, Janácek was prompted to revise it. Following the first performance of the work in Prague by the pianist Stepán Václav in December 1922, the composer and interpreter jointly undertook a revision, which was published in 1924. We are now publishing this definitive version in a Henle Urtext edition, which also provides convincing solutions for practical questions, such as how to deal with inconsistent pedal markings by Václav and Jánacek.
Description: Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) composed the Klaviermusik Op. 29 during a time overflowing with musical activities, which also brought long-term changes into his life. He had achieved a spectacular breakthrough as a composer in 1921 with the premieres of the one-act operas Mörder, Hoffnung der Frauen, Op. 12 and Das Nusch-Nuschi, Op. 20 in Stuttgart as well as the Third String Quartet, Op. 16 in Donaueschingen. Works such as the one-act opera Sancta Susanna, Op. 21, the Kammermusik Nr. 1, Op. 24/1 and the Suite 1922, Op. 26 for piano show him to be a radical avant-gardist. He was now considered the leading German composer of his generation, a reputation that he was able to consolidate over the long term with a plethora of new works in nearly all genres, including ballet, film and entertainment music as well as parody pieces. In the Wittgenstein estate, only accessible in 2002, only one copy of unknown origin, a fair copy, but with a good number of errors, of the Klaviermusik mit Orchester has been preserved. It was obtained in the same year by the Hindemith Foundation (Switzerland) and since then has been kept at the Hindemith Institute, Frankfurt/Main. In the Hindemith estate, sketches resembling short-score for the first, third and fourth parts of the work have been preserved. With the help of these, the note-text of the copy of the work could at least be proof-read and rectified as required without any problem. Thus, 81 years after its composition, Hindemith's Klaviermusik (Klavier: linke Hand) mit Orchester, Op. 29 is finally accessible and can be made known for the first time. (Giselher Schubert, Translation: David Babcock)
