How to install Scorch in Internet Explorer.

1. Click on the Get Scorch button:

2. A window will open as shown below and Scorch will automatically install. When Scorch has completed then you will see the staff with a few notes and the word Trombone at the beginning. Once you see this little music selection, then you know Scorch has been successfully installed on your computer.

If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 - then you will be asked to click here as shown above.

How to install Scorch in a different browser.

1. Click on the Get Scorch button:

2. A window will open where it will ask you to select your operating system and enter your e-mail.

3. Once you click "NEXT" a window will open asking where you would like to download the installer file from. Start with HTTP 1 and click on Download.

Please read the instructions below as they will give you the final step in installing Scorch.

Sometimes you have to manually choose where the plug-in is to be installed - such as with Mozilla Firefox.
In this case, make sure the Manually Choose Browser Directory box is checked.

The location is usually C:\Program File\Mozilla Firefox\plugins. (what this is simply doing is telling Scorch to install the plug in into the Mozilla plugins folder as this is sometimes not automatically installed into the correct place)

Then click OK to finish the installation and you will be able to see the music in the new browser.

I am using the SBC/Yahoo Global browser and I cannot get my music to print.

You need to Open a different browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox as a separate browser - don't use your Yahoo or SBC default browser as opening a separate browser instead of the default browser does the trick. You may already have this on your system: it can usually be accessed by clicking the Windows Start menu in the bottom task bar, and navigating to: All Programs > Internet Explorer.

If you do not have Internet Explorer installed separately then you can download and install from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

If you wish to use Mozilla Firefox then you can download and install from:
http://www.mozilla.com

Then make sure Scorch is installed in the new browser by going to:
http://www.sheetmusicdigital.com/aboutscorchfiles.asp

Then log in from within the new browser and you will see the link for your music below your logged in name. You should now be able to print your music!

The easiest way to tell if the file is the correct one when loaded, is that you will not see the 'add-to-cart' button on the page where you print the music. This button is deleted if the file loaded is authorized to print.

When I call up different songs using Scorch, the same title loads all the time!

This has to do with your browser settings and how it handles temporary internet files. Go to your Internet options in the browser (for example Internet Explorer choose "tools" then "Internet Options" and make sure that under "settings" for temporary internet files, you have checked "automatically" for "check for newer versions of stored pages"). Go here to see how the music should look when ready to print.

I get the error message 'You must enter a scale value of 1 or greater'.

Sometimes people using the SBC or Yahoo default browser experience problems printing and will receive this 'You must enter a scale value of 1 or greater'.

The song is not the version I wanted!

When buying a score you have to use the free preview sample to make sure the copy you are buying is the version you need. The publishers determine the versions and on many titles that means there are more than one artist it may be arranged for. That is the purpose of the free preview pane, to provide you with a free sample so you can determine if this is the right score for you.

Once you have purchased a score we allow you to view all pages of the score, even before you print the music, so you can see the complete version and where there may be key changes to allow you to determine if and how you should transpose the score to your desired key.

If you discover it's the wrong version, Do Not Print but instead contact us with your name and purchase information. If it has not been printed we can cancel the order and either give you a credit for another song, or if the song is not available in the version you want we can offer a refund. Once printed our company is charged by the publisher for the completed session.

My browser crashes when I try to view the music.

This either means that scorch is not installed properly, or your computer is low on memory. Try re-installing scorch again first. If that doesn't work try cleaning/deleting your recent documents and emptying your recycle bin. Then reboot and try again. It can also mean your computer may be in dire need of basic maintenance. When was the last time you defragged the system? If you don't even know what defrag means then I highly suggest you read this article. To find this program on your PC .. Click (Start –> Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Disk Defragmenter).

In many of these cases there could be adware or spyware on your computer. These usually come in so called 'free' products such as Smiley downloads or certain shareware products like 'free' download accelerators etc. These Adware and Spyware programs eat up your virtual memory as they are constantly contacting their home computer and can cause your browser and other applications to crash when activating plug ins like Scorch. An excellent application program to get rid of these parasites is Adaware from LavaSoft and it's free. We highly recommend this download. Click here to get your own free version.

I'm Using AOL and the links to the sheet music do not work!

If you are using AOL and find the links to the pages that open the sheet music do not work, then you need to open Internet Explorer as a separate browser, outside of AOL, and then navigate our site from this newly opened browser. The links to the sheet music will then work.

I've installed Scorch, but all I see is a box where the music should be.

Scorch is fully compatible with all current versions of Netscape Navigator and Opera on both Windows and Mac. It is also compatible with Internet Explorer on Mac.

Make sure you have installed the latest version of Scorch by going here.

Once you have downloaded and installed the Scorch plug-in, make sure you close and restart the browser to allow Scorch to be properly set-up in browser registry.

The music is printing but I am getting weird symbols and blocks where the notes etc. should be!

If you find that Scorch isn't displaying correctly when viewing some but not all scores then you may not have the Helsinki font installed.
This may be due to the Scorch installer failing to install that particular set of fonts.
Typical errors that you may see are brackets on the starts of systems or some lines e.g. pedal markings displaying as boxes.

To fix this please download the Sibelius Font Installer by clicking here. Then save the file to your desktop and double-click on it. When the installer has finished the fonts will be installed so you can then go back and refresh the page.

These are answers to frequently asked questions about Scorch, which should help solve any problems with it.

Web page printed correctly but with no music or staves on

To print, don't click Print at the top of your browser window, or Print in the File menu, or type Command-P or Ctrl+P - these will print the web page, not the score. Instead, find the score again and click the Print button on the Scorch 2 toolbar (immediately above the music).

No paper came out of the printer

Check your printer is switched on, contains paper and is plugged into your computer. If it is, it is probably not set up correctly. Please consult your computer's or printer's manual, or see If there is still a problem below.

[Back]

Printer ran out of paper

With most printers, don't turn off the printer - just feed in some more paper and it should continue printing.

[Back]

Playback doesn't work or sounds strange

Your computer may have several different sound devices you can use (e.g. soundcard, software synthesizer, MIDI output); some of these may be silent or have inferior sounds. Find the score again, click Scorch's Sound button, and choose a different device.

[Back]

The music doesn't fit on the paper or is cropped off

Find the score again, click Scorch's Print button, then on the Print dialog box switch on the Fit to Paper option. (On Mac this is in the Sibelius area of the dialog box.) Then print.

[Back]

Staff lines and note stems missing, uneven or have rounded ends

Find the score again, click Scorch's Print button, then on the Print dialog box change the Substitute Lines option. (On Mac this is in the Sibelius area of the dialog box.) Then print.

[Back]

Arpeggios (vertical wavy lines) or glissandos (diagonal wavy lines) not positioned properly

Find the score again, click Scorch's Print button, then on the Print dialog box change the Substitute Arpeggios, gliss., etc. option. (On Mac this is in the Sibelius area of the dialog box.) Then print.

Alternate pages are missing

You set the score to print only odd/even-numbered pages. Find the score again, click Scorch's Print button, then on the Print dialog box choose the Normal and All options. (On Mac these are in the Sibelius area of the dialog box.) Then print.

Tried to print several copies but it didn't work

You can print unlimited copies of all our 2000+ public domain titles when you are a Gold or Diamond member, but this must be done one copy at a time.

When purchasing a licensed score you can't print more copies than you have paid for. However, there is a way you can print all copyright protected songs in the Scorch format 2 times. The first time you print, a little box will open asking if your music printed correctly - select NO. A second print permission is automatically set allowing you to try one more time again. If you have select NO the second time again, it will take you to a page that will ask you to contact us with your problem so we can help!

[Back]

Notes print as text characters or other font problems

Try changing your printer's font settings. For instance, in Windows try printing again but click Properties in the Print dialog box, then try changing options which affect font printing, such as Print fonts as graphics or Print TrueType as graphics (usually on the Font tab of the Properties dialog box).

If there is still a printing problem

If you have tried the above solutions to printing problems without success, check if you have the latest driver for your printer.

You should be able to download the latest driver from the printer manufacturer's web site:

After downloading the driver, save it somewhere easy to find, such as on your desktop. Then install the new driver.

To install the new driver on Windows, click the Start button at the bottom left of the screen, then Settings, then Printers. Then double-click Add Printer and follow the instructions.

When asked for the manufacturer and model of your printer, if you have just obtained a new driver (e.g. by downloading it), click Have Disk... and find the new driver file you downloaded.

When you've finished, find the score again, click Scorch's Print button and print it to see if it works. You may need to consult this web page again to adjust the way it prints.

Error message: "The score is corrupt or missing"

This error message appears when you are using a very old version of Scorch to view a file saved from a newer version of Sibelius or Sibelius Internet Edition. Try upgrading to a newer version of Scorch.

Problems reinstalling Scorch 2 (Windows only)

In certain circumstances, Scorch 2 does not reinstall correctly if you try and install it after using Add/Remove Programs (in Control Panel) to uninstall an older version.

If Scorch was the only plug-in installed for your browser, the Scorch uninstaller also removes the Plugins folder. This means that when you attempt to reinstall Scorch 2, the installer cannot find the required folder to install the plug-in.

The solution is simple: re-create the Plugins folder in the correct location (e.g. for Internet Explorer, usually C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Plugins), and then run the Scorch installer again.

I've paid for a song to print but it only prints the first sample page.

Once you are logged in, you will see your name and the link for your music as shown below.

Below is an example of what you should see when you log in. In this case there are 2 scores waiting to be printed. Click on the link to open the music for printing!

When the music opens for printing, make sure you see the "ready to print" icon just above the music on the left as shown below.

It may also have to do with your browser settings and how it handles temporary internet files. Go to your Internet options in the browser (for example Internet Explorer choose "tools" then "Internet Options" and make sure that under "settings" for temporary internet files, you have checked "Every Visit To The Page" for "check for newer versions of stored pages". What this does is makes sure that the newest file is called from the server instead of an old one from your cache memory.

Also you may need to clear all your temporary internet files. To do this - you again go to Internet Options and under "Temporary Internet Files" choose "delete files".

Then close the browser and try again.
